You do not have to renew or pay back fees on an expired registration to donate your car in St. Petersburg. With Gulf Wheels, what matters is a valid Florida title in your name, not current tags or inspection. We’ll arrange a free tow anywhere in the Tampa Bay area, you’ll receive a tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind, and once the pickup is complete, the vehicle becomes our responsibility – not yours.
Here’s how it works for a Florida car with lapsed registration: as long as you have a clear, signed title that matches your ID, we can usually accept it, whether it’s sitting in Shore Acres, Kenwood, Old Northeast, or across the bridge in Clearwater or Tampa. The car does not need to be running or drivable; our towing partners handle that at no cost to you. After your donation, you should report the transfer to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) to remove your liability. You still receive your full IRS tax acknowledgment from Heritage for the Blind, and you get that expired-tag headache out of your driveway.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have the Florida title in your name
Grab your vehicle’s Florida title and make sure your name matches your driver’s license. Don’t worry about the registration card or the stickers on your plate. Even if the tags are months or years expired in St. Petersburg, a valid, signed title is the key to completing the donation paperwork legally.
2. Call or go online to start your Gulf Wheels donation
Share basic info about the car: year, make, model, VIN, where it’s parked (home near Crescent Lake, condo in downtown St. Pete, storage lot in Pinellas Park, etc.), and confirm the expired registration. Our team will review your situation and let you know if there’s anything unusual about your title before we schedule your free pickup.
3. Schedule a free tow anywhere in Tampa Bay
We arrange towing at no cost to you throughout St. Petersburg and the broader Tampa Bay area. The vehicle can be non-running, flat-tired, or stuck in a driveway. The tow driver will guide you on where to sign the title. You don’t need current plates or registration to move the vehicle; the licensed tow company handles transport.
4. Hand over the signed title and keys at pickup
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Gulf Wheels’ authorized agent. If you have keys or remotes, great; if not, we can often still accept the vehicle. Once the tow truck leaves, responsibility for the car shifts to us and Heritage for the Blind. You’re no longer on the hook for storing or dealing with that expired-tag vehicle.
5. Notify FLHSMV of the transfer and keep records
After pickup, submit a notice of sale/transfer with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. This helps protect you from future tickets or tolls tied to the VIN. Keep a copy of the signed title and your donation confirmation from Gulf Wheels with your tax records for when you file.
6. Receive your tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind
You’ll receive an acknowledgment from Heritage for the Blind for at least $500. If the vehicle ultimately sells for more than $500, you’ll receive the information you need for IRS Form 1098-C. Your expired registration does not reduce your tax benefit; deductions are based on the sale outcome and IRS rules, not your tag status.
Potential complications to watch for
Title is missing, damaged, or in a previous owner’s name
Tip: If the Florida title is lost or still in someone else’s name, we may need you to get a replacement or have the titled owner sign it over first. Check your paperwork before scheduling the tow so we can help you avoid last-minute delays at pickup.
Active loans or liens showing on the Florida title
Tip: If a bank or finance company is listed as a lienholder on the title, the lien must be satisfied or released before donation. Contact the lender or check your records for a lien satisfaction document. We can explain what the title should look like in Florida before we send a truck.
Personal plates or SunPass still associated with the vehicle
Tip: If you have a personalized or specialty plate, or a SunPass transponder, plan to remove them before tow. Return or transfer plates according to FLHSMV guidance, and move your SunPass to another vehicle. This helps prevent tolls or fees from following that old, expired-tag car.
HOA, apartment, or storage rules for towing on property
Tip: If your vehicle is in a condo garage, apartment complex, or storage lot in areas like Gateway or Feather Sound, check any towing rules. Let your property manager or office know we’re coming so our tow truck can access the vehicle without issues or delays on pickup day.
