Confirm the Florida rule
Florida treats the plate as yours after donation. Still, confirm the current procedure with the Florida DMV or your county motor vehicle office before the vehicle leaves, especially if the plate is personalized, disabled, specialty, or tied to a registration issue. Ask one question: should I transfer this plate now, or surrender it because I am ending this registration?
Remove plates before towing
Take the plate off the vehicle before the tow. Check both the rear plate and any plate frame or fasteners you want to keep. Do not place the plate in the glove box or trunk. The tow driver is moving the vehicle, not managing your registration. Put the plate in a safe place with your title, donation receipt, and insurance paperwork.
Transfer or surrender them
If you are buying or already own another vehicle, ask the Florida DMV about transferring the plate to that vehicle. If you are not transferring it, surrender it through the DMV, tax collector, or other motor vehicle process Florida accepts. Do not throw the plate away unless the DMV specifically tells you that destruction is an accepted option for your situation.
Keep the surrender receipt
After surrendering the plate, keep the surrender receipt. This is your proof that you took the plate out of service and canceled the registration. Insurance companies sometimes ask for that proof before they cancel coverage without a penalty. Store the receipt with your donation records, title copy, and any DMV confirmation you receive for your file.
File the transfer notice
Plate removal does not replace the notice of transfer or release of liability. Complete that separate DMV task after the donation transfer is signed. If the tow is today
If the Gulf Wheels tow is already on the way in Tampa Bay, remove the plate now and set it aside before handing over the keys. If the vehicle is inaccessible, tell the driver you need a minute to remove the plate before loading. If the plate cannot be removed safely because of stripped screws, damage, or location, call the Florida DMV for the next accepted step. Do not assume the plate can leave with the car as part of the load.
Why the receipt matters
The surrender receipt closes the loop. It shows that the plate was returned or otherwise accepted through the motor vehicle office and supports your request to cancel the registration. It can also protect you when an insurer asks why coverage ended after the donation. Without a receipt, you may have to reconstruct the plate history later. Keep a digital copy and a paper copy until your DMV and insurance records both show the change. This is especially useful if questions come up after the vehicle is gone.
